Korenica Croatia Travel Guide: What to do + Eat Near Plitvice Lakes National Park
/Korenica, Croatia, has remained relatively under the radar, yet a closer look on Google Maps you’ll find that the town has numerous trails and its close proximity to the renowned Plitvice Lakes National Park shines as a prominent feature.
Additionally, the town is known for its Falling Lakes Hostel and that’s pretty much a highlight on its own — I was able to meet people who were interested in exploring the trails and learning about their lives.
A little bit about Korenica: this is a town that carries a rich history and a deep connection to its surroundings. Originally founded in the 16th century as a settlement primarily for cattle herders and shepherds, Korenica's history is closely intertwined with the lush landscapes that surround it.
The town's name, "Korenica," is literally derived from the Croatian word "koreni," which means "roots." This is quite fitting, as the town's roots can be traced back to its agricultural origins.
Over the centuries, Korenica evolved into a vibrant community, with its inhabitants cultivating the land, raising livestock, and living off the bounties of the natural world.
Ofcourse, one of Korenica's most notable features is its proximity to the Plitvice Lakes National Park, a natural wonder that draws visitors from around the world. And if there’s one Croatia travel tip, there’s a lot to see and do so plan accordingly.
This park's extraordinary beauty has undoubtedly shaped Korenica's identity, as it serves as a gateway for travelers to explore the stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and lakes that lie just beyond the town's borders.
But don’t just stop there, I urge you to stay back in Korenica if you love slow travelling.

Trails That Lead to Adventure
For a nature lover like me, the trails that crisscross Korenica were an absolute delight. I started with a journey along the Plitvice Lakes National Park trails, a UNESCO World Heritage site that left me utterly awe-struck.
The trails were well-maintained and offered a mix of easy strolls and challenging hikes, catering to every level of adventurer.
Whether you're an avid hiker or a casual walker, you'll find a trail that suits your pace and offers you a glimpse into the untouched beauty of Croatia's nature.
Where Croatia Meets Bosnia
One of the things that truly sets Korenica apart is its proximity to Bosnia. A short drive away, you can cross the border and find yourself in a whole new world.
The blend of cultures in this borderland is palpable – from the architecture to the cuisine, you'll experience the harmonious marriage of two distinct cultures.
The best way is to hike Plješivica if you love to explore remnants of the Balkan war.
Staying in Falling Lakes Hostel
If you love the outdoors, the Falling Lakes Hostel is the best way to explore Croatia. There’s a big community vibe and it is easy to meet people who were not just checking bucketlists, but more interested in slowing down and spending time in off-the-beaten-path trails.
The hosts gives you everything you need when you check-in and they try to put a group together if you wish to go to Plitvice Lakes National Park, or do day trips to any hikes in the summers.
There are three main activities that people do there: visit the Plitvice Lakes, Kayaking and Hiking. You can easily choose one and join any group.
Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park
The park has seven designated walking routes for visitors to explore and experience the park's natural wonders. These routes are organised to showcase different sections and attractions within the park.
While it’s not a tough “hike” to the national park just more like a long stroll, it is still worth a visit to walk all the different routes and see the various waterfalls, lush forests and pristine lakes.

Hiking Mrsinjgrad Hill
A prominent hill leading out to the remains of a medieval fortress that stands at 1,097 metres.
Along with the remains of the city, on the hill are the ruins of Prozor, small fortifications surrounded by walls. It was only 2.5 hour long but the views of the birch trees and the surroundings made it well worth it.
The trail is clearly marked throughout with red and white markers approximately every 10-15 metres. There was also an abundance of wildlife from birds and butterflies, to fungi and flowers. The path can be a little tricky at times and a bit muddy once you’re exposed at the hilltop.
In total, it took us about 4.2km to complete the trail. The starting point is on the same road as the Falling Lakes Hostel making it the perfect place to gather, meet people and go for a hike.

Hiking Gola Plješivica
I wanted to do this hike but the weather conditions were not ideal. The Pljesevica mountain trek is a 19.2km trail that is nestled in Croatia’s Dinaric Alps.
This captivating journey reveals multiple peaks, encompassing undulating terrain that winds around its summits. Reaching a height of 1646 meters at Gola Pljesevica's summit, this trail promises a rewarding ascent.
The pinnacle boasts a stage-like rock formation and it is strategically positioned featuring, making it one of Croatia's finest hikes. It takes an average of 7 h 19 min to complete.
At the peak, you will also find plenty of remnants from the Balkan war with abandoned buildings and old relics. At one point, it also served as a crossing point for a lot of refugees who were crossing over between both countries. There may be random police checks so best to bring your ID with you.
The ascent to the mountain Plješivica and the peak begins from the settlement of Korenica. The mountain is also called Lička Plješivica and is located on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The peaks are visible from the highway and are easily recognisable.
The first part goes towards the village of Mihaljevac by an asphalt road which can be reached after approx. 2 km.

Walking around in the fields of Korenica
If trudging through a steep Plješivica mountain is not your idea of spending time in Korenica, the next best way is to walk around the fields of Korenica and head in the direction of Gola Plješivica.
You will find find karst fields, and jaw-dropping views of green fields akin to a windows wallpaper.
Have dinner at Bistro Time
We found the soups, pizzas and cevapi to be amazingly affordable considering how close it is to Plitvice Lakes. Their patties are huge and pizzas are really big and we went there for two days in a row with a group of the hostel girls!
