How To Get To Plitvice Lakes National Park + Best Hiking Routes
/Most people who travel to Croatia would not miss out on the stunning national parks and gorgeous parks.
Plitvice Lake National Park is one of them — the park is home to 16 interconnected lakes, which are renowned for their vibrant colors, ranging from azure to green, blue, and gray.
The colors are a result of the minerals and organisms present in the water.
It is a known fact that the park is a popular tourist destination and attracts visitors from all over the world. It offers a well-maintained system of wooden walkways and hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the lakes, waterfalls, and the surrounding wilderness.
But one thing about the park is that it is absolutely packed! I went in May and not in peak tourist season, but even then the park could get absolutely packed.
Weather plays a big role as well. There was quite a bit of rain when we visited the park which added to the flow of the numerous cascades and waterfalls, creating quite a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Overview of Plitvice Lake National Park
The Plitvice Lake National park boasts an impressive 73,000 acres. If you’re hiking, just know that there are well-marked hiking trails, carefully arranged into seven distinct routes, promising a diverse and exciting exploration of the park.
The first section begins at the lower lakes area, where you'll find Entrance 1 and the magnificent Veliki Slap, also known as the Big Waterfall. From here, you will have to grab the shuttle which takes you to the upper lakes section, unveiling some of the most charming boardwalk trails and waterfalls within the park.
The third part encircles Proscansko Lake, offering a tranquil escape into nature's embrace.
Is one day enough for Plitvice Lakes National Park?
One day is more than enough to explore the trails in Plitvice Lake National Park. With one day, you can still explore some of the main attractions, such as the lower and upper lakes sections, the boardwalk trails, and the iconic Veliki Slap waterfall.
The park's well-organised transportation system, including boats and shuttles, allows you to efficiently move between different areas and optimize your time.
But if you want more hiking and something that’s less touristy, I would recommend that you to stay in Korenica town and use it as a base to go to the national park on the second day. The journey from Korenica to Plitvička Jezera takes as little as 15 minutes.
You can also opt for a guided walking tour here if you prefer a bit of arrangement! There’s also an e-bike guided tour here that’s really cool and completely off-the-beaten track!
Pro Tip: If you love hiking, I would recommend staying put in Korenica town. The town has ample historic routes and viewpoints that are completely off-the-beaten path such as Pljesevica Mountain trek (hike is at the border between Bosnia and Croatia filled with remnants from the Yugoslavia war) and/or Msinj Grad Hill.
How To Get To Plitvice Lakes National Park?
If you’re coming from Zagreb or Zadar and even Split, I would recommend taking a tour as a day trip. I met a lot of people who took the following tours to save time (click on the link):
From Zagreb: Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke Day Trip: You get to visit the lakes and discover the fairytale village of Rastoke and see its 17th-century watermills.
From Zadar: Plitvice Lakes Day Tour, Boat Ride & Ticket Included: Zadar is closer to Plitvice Lakes than Zagreb and if you don’t really want to worry about the logistics, this would be a better option.
From Split: Plitvice Lakes Guided Day Tour with Tickets: For a lot of people on a set itinerary, sometimes day trip from Split is all you can really work with — this is the best option for that reason!
Make it a road-trip and rent a car: Or alternatively, you could rent a car from HERE and drive straight to the park!
If you want to go on your own, you can catch a bus operated by Flixbus from Zagreb Bus Station which leaves at 6:45 AM every day and the bus will take you to Plitvička Jezera in 2 hours.
The same for Zadar, the bus leaves at 8.30am everyday and you can reach Plitvice in 2 hours.
If you have more time to spare, I would recommend staying in Korenica town for atleast 3 days and using it as a base to explore nearby hikes or alternatively stay in Plitvice Lakes Area.

Is Entrance One or Two better for Plitvice Lake National Park?
Ultimately, both entrances provide a fantastic experience, and you can see the majority of the park from either starting point.
If you have the flexibility, you can consider entering through one entrance and exiting through the other, allowing you to cover more ground and experience different parts of the park.
Entrance 1 is still the most popular option. It provides easy access to the lower lakes section, which includes the iconic Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall). This area features some of the park's most impressive waterfalls and beautiful boardwalk trails.

What month is best for Plitvice Lake National Park?
The best time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park depends on your preferences and the type of experience you are seeking. Here are some considerations for different seasons:
Spring (April to June): Spring is a wonderful time to visit the park, especially from late April to early June. During this period, the park comes alive with vibrant colors, blooming flowers, and lush vegetation. The water levels are typically high due to the melting snow, creating impressive waterfalls and a captivating atmosphere. The weather is generally pleasant, making it ideal for hiking and exploring the park on foot.
Summer (July to August): Summer is the peak tourist season, and the park can get quite crowded, especially in July and August. However, if you can handle the crowds, you'll be rewarded with long daylight hours, warm temperatures, and the opportunity to enjoy boat rides on the lakes. Be prepared for warmer weather and consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the busiest times.
Autumn (September to October): Autumn is another excellent time to visit Plitvice Lakes. The foliage begins to change, painting the landscape with a stunning array of autumn colors. The weather is still pleasant, and the crowds start to thin out compared to the summer months. September is particularly beautiful as the waterfalls are still fed by the summer rains, and the fall colors begin to emerge.
Winter (November to March): Winter can be a magical time to visit the park if you don't mind the colder temperatures. The park's frozen waterfalls and snow-covered landscapes create a unique and picturesque setting. However, keep in mind that some trails and facilities may be closed or limited during this time, and weather conditions can be unpredictable.
To summarize, the best time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park would be during the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn when the weather is pleasant, the crowds are more manageable, and the natural beauty is at its peak.
However, each season offers its own charm, and the park's allure is timeless, making it a captivating destination to explore year-round.
